Oil grade explained

Light Oil Suction Flow Velocity - Recommended suction flow velocity when pumping light oils Liquid Densities - Densities of common liquids like acetone, beer, oil, water and more Liquids - Kinematic Viscosities - Kinematic viscosities of common liquids like motor oil, diesel fuel, peanut oil The SAE grading system indicates oil viscosity in simple numbers ranging from the thin oil (10) to the very thick oil (140 or above). Heavier weight, or higher grade oil is more viscous and therefore thicker as it flows between the gears. Light grade oil is ideal for small, fast, polished gears under a light load.

13 Nov 2017 Engine Oil Explained in Very Simple Terms you should use only the recommended “xWy” (for eg 20W-40, 10W30 etc) grade of engine oil. Oils may have more than one performance level. For automotive gasoline engines, the latest engine oil service category includes the performance properties of  28 May 2018 Dynamic viscosity is measured using the Cold Crank Simulator test, and is used to determine an oil's low-temperature viscosity grade. This would  Simply put, viscosity is the oil's resistance to flow or, for the layman, an oil's speed of flow as measured through a device known as a viscometer. The thicker (

The second number after the "W" indicates the oil's viscosity measured at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius). This number represents the oil's resistance to thinning at high temperatures. For example, 10W-30 oil will thin out at higher temperatures faster than 10W-40 will.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the only national trade association that represents all aspects of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Our more than 600 corporate members, from the largest major oil company to the smallest of independents, come from all segments of the industry.

Oil Viscosity / Grade. Viscosity is the most misunderstood aspect of oil and yet it is the most important. Viscosity is the force required to shear (break) the oil at a certain speed and temperature. Oils work because they have viscosity; the drag of a rotating part pulls oil from a low-pressure area into a high pressure area and “floats” the surfaces apart. Grading of Gear Oils Gear oils have a base grade which determines most of their qualities. Most of them are obsolete for automotive purposes at this point, with only GL-4 gear oil and GL-5 gear oil being used in modern vehicles. They’re all a little bit different. The grade is a literal measurement of the oil's ratio of absolute viscosity in centipoise (a unit of measurement) to the density, also known as centistoke. Grades Since its inception in 1975, the organizations have developed 20 viscosity gradients to cover the range of oils and lubricants that are common in hydraulic application. The suffixes (0, 5, 10, 15 and 25) followed by the letter W designate the engine oil's "winter" grade. Look to your owner's manual. It specifies the viscosity grade required for your car's engine. Today, the most common grades are 5W-30 and 10W-30.

The first piece of information speaks to viscosity grade. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines a numerical system for grading motor oils according  9 Mar 2017 oil grade.
